Punjab government backtracks on decision on Sainis

By Balwant Dhillon on March 1st, 2009

The declaration of Sainis as Backward Class in Punjab has been held in abeyance by the Punjab government. Earlier with an eye at the elections, the Punjab government had hurriedly declared Sainis as a backward class. According to an official spokesperson of the Punjab government, “The notification issued earlier in this regard would not come into effect till the matter is examined and considered in its entirety”. Harcharan Bains, media advisor to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal said that a final decision would be taken only after taking into consideration the views of a wide spectrum of the members of the community, fully respecting their sentiments.

The decision of the Punjab government comes in the wake of several delegations from the community calling the Chief Minister which sought a review of the decision of the state government. The Chief Minister had already given an assurance that the state government had no intention of forcing any decision on the community against their will.
